If you’re considering a fresh haircut that’s effortlessly cool and endlessly versatile (two for the price of one), look no further than the layered bob with bangs. This short, textured cut has been around for years and is loved for its face-framing shape and ability to add instant edge to any look.

But for those who haven’t yet tried the cut and are questioning whether or not to get the chop, we spoke to award-winning hairstylist and Cosmopolitan Contributing Expert Jordanna Cobella, who shared her top tips on how to make the layered bob with bangs work for you. From soft, curtain-like bangs and chin-length layers to choppy micro-bangs and textured ends, here are ten of the best takes on the bob trend, plus how to style and maintain your ‘do.

What is a layered bob with bangs?

Before getting to variations of bangs, let’s address the layered bob. Breaking it down, Cobella says, “A layered bob is essentially a bob with some textured layers, which can relieve texture, release curls, and add volume and width to its shape.”

One haircut that the layered bob sometimes gets confused with is the choppy bob. Explaining, Cobella says, “A choppy bob normally means a bob with a shattered edge (only the very ends are layered) rather than the haircut itself, but the terms can be used interchangeably.”

Now that we’ve got the lengths nailed down, let’s confront the bangs! Bangs work well with layered bobs because they balance the face shape while adding softness and dimension to the haircut. The layers create movement and volume, and bangs draw attention to the eyes, framing the face in a flattering way. “There are no restrictions when it comes to bang types that work with layered bobs; Micro bangs, rounded, grown-out bottle neck bangs and Bardot bangs are all suitable options,” Cobella adds.

Who is best suited to the layered bob with bangs hairstyle?

If you have natural texture in your hair, this haircut will work perfectly for you. “The layers in the bob add volume and width and release the curls so it can be worn in its widest silhouette,” Cobella says.

However, if you have super straight or fine hair, Cobella advises avoiding this cut; “It can take away from the thickness of the edge of your haircut and sometimes lines can appear if your hair is super straight and over-layered,” she says.

As for face shapes and the layered bob with bangs, Cobella shares that there are several points to note:

  • Oval: Suits all bob types, blunt and layered included
  • Heart-shaped: balances a wider forehead with weight at the jaw
  • Square: soften angles by choosing a blunt or layered bob with curved styling or a side part
  • Round: best if your bob is below the chin to elongate the face

Is a layered bob with bangs high-maintenance?

The built-in shape of layers in a layered bob can add natural movement and volume, making it easier to achieve a styled look with minimal effort. However (!!), depending on your hair type and the specific cut, some styling may still be needed to prevent the layers from looking uneven or flat. Wavy or textured hair may air-dry with ease, while straight or fine hair may need a quick blow-dry or styling product to enhance the layers.

Paired with bangs–blunt, curtain or wispy, for example–this haircut can be somewhat high-maintenance. Bangs often require regular trims to keep their shape and may need daily styling to sit properly. So, before you commit, be prepared!
